Singapore finished 4th at the ASEAN Schools Games 2019

1 Play Sports proudly broadcasted the 11th ASEAN Schools Games held in Semarang, Indonesia from 17th to 25th July 2019. This annual event featured 1,600 student-athletes from 10 nations across 9 sports. We saw a tremendous display of sportsmanship and athleticism from these youth athletes around Southeast Asia.

All ASEAN athletes have proved themselves to be promising young athletes during the event as records were rewritten in multiple disciplines. Singapore sent more than 170 student-athletes across 8 different sports and returned with a haul of 38 medals. Team Singapore finished 4th on the medal table, with a total of 10 gold, 11 silver, and 17 bronze medals.

The most notable local hero was 15-years old Elizabeth-Ann Tan Shee Ru of Nanyang Girls’ High School. Having broken multiple school game records over her competing years, she once again set a record in Semarang with a time of 14.25s in the Girls’ 100m Hurdles and brought home the gold medal. This has one-upped her record, set just 3 months earlier in the Singapore National School Games of 14.59s in the same event.

Singapore also proved to be a force to be reckoned with in the Table Tennis events and brought home six out of the seven gold medals available in the sport. A key player in the sport, 13-years old Izaac Quek, beat the competition despite being one of the youngest players that competed in the event. He took home three gold medals in the Boys’ Singles, Boys’ Team and Mixed Doubles events.

Athletes from other countries also showed strong performances over the week. Vietnam’s Le Tien Long set a new Games record to claim the Boys’ 3000km title with a finishing time of 8:52.93 minutes. Prangthip Chitkhokkraud of Thailand avenged her loss in the 2018 Games and set a record of 1.76m in the Girls’ High Jump event. In Swimming, Thailand crushed another record as Jinjutha Pholjamjumrus in the Girls’ 400m Freestyle completed the race in 4:19.57 minutes.
